Behind the Screen Print : Joel Millerchip
Our very first name on the Imprint list to be completed, Joel is actually based across the border in Suffolk. Born in Birmingham, Scott says
“My distinctive illustrative style is perfect for bold, impactful designs that work perfectly in print, on a wall, on a screen or all over your left leg.”
We put together this three layer screen print hand pulled onto 350gsm Pink Colourplan in an edition of 40 at A3 (42cm x 29.7cm).
Joel’s print was actually hugely informed by the paper stock, we discovered the Pink Colorplan in a drawer at the studio. When we showed Joel he was a massive fan of its dusky pink understated look. Printing white onto a coloured card stock can often be an issue without the right tools. Getting good coverage and a strong white requires an opaque ink like Permaset Super Cover (normally used for textile printing). A fabric ink that works just as well on paper, capable of even printing white over black.
As per usual we opted to use the best in the game, Screentec gold ink for the flower and accent layer. In talks with Joel we had discussed what the second colour might be, in the end the gold provides the print with a beautiful physicality.
We can’t wait to see what Joel gets up to next and hopefully we will have the privilege to print it!
