Behind the Screen Print : Florence Poppy
We were quick to approach local illustrator and animal lover Florence Poppy Dennis, for our imprint series. Flo is an illustrator and surface pattern designer currently based and making work in Norwich, UK. Inspired by visuals from the 1960s and 70s and everyday life, her work combines playful characters with commonplace themes.
(We produced this five colour screen print hand pulled onto Mohawk Superfine 352gsm, edition of 40 and 61.5 x 45 cm with a deckled edge. )
It was so much fun putting each layer down on this print, as each one brought a new level of glee to it and Flo’s colour separations were a screen printer’s dream! Using low opacity inks we were able to create a print with 5 colours that looks like so many more.
I was particularly proud of what we achieved with the balance of the blue layer. The green that was achieved fitted the vintage style of the print perfectly while still giving us a vibrant blue where it sat alone. We tested a few different blue mixes to find the right one, it was important to get these colours saturated as well as give off a retro vibe by mixing the browns into most of the other colours.
A print that is as equally fun to work on as it is to look at. You can practically smell the spaghetti when it’s in the room. We can’t wait to work with Florence again!
