Behind the Screen Print : Smalls
We would be remise if we didn’t have any Norwich-isms in our first batch of shop prints! Smalls is an abstract tattooist from Norwich. He also makes board games & when he is not doing those things he tries to make a little room for art.
For Smalls we produced this one colour screen print, pulled by hand onto Somerset Satin 300gsm, limited Edition of 40 at A3 (42 x 29.7cm) with a deckled edge.
The Norwich cathedral is such an iconic local landmark, and so too is Smalls. Co-owner of True Love Tattoos one of the best spots for tats around. We wanted to make this print as bold as possible, we took our most pigmented black to fully saturate this design and fit the striking image. We also balanced this strong black with an off white paper stock, often high contrast like black on full white is bold but too harsh.
This piece is also unsuspectingly detailed, the thin lines require a light touch when hand pulling. Pressing too hard can cause ink bleeding in thin lines. When printing the full edition you need to keep pressure and angle consistent the whole time, otherwise inconsistency shows in the prints. Designs like this one are deceptively tricky to keep looking clean, often this kind of detail is where people new to printing find it difficult.
A joy to print and a joy to see, a print of the cathedral is necessary in every Norwich home and beyond!
